The Effects of Home Visit Parent Education Program on Mother-Infant Interaction in Families of Infants with Autism Spectrum Disorder in China

Lee So-Hyun
Abstract
This study examined the effects of the home visit parent education program for infants with ASD.
The home visit parent education program of this study consists of 2 sessions of understanding disability and 8 sessions of learning hands-on strategies that promote the mother-infant interactions.
Participants were 29 toddlers aged 26-33 months with ASD and their parents living in Changchun, Jilin province, China. Fourteen infants and their parents randomly assigned to the experimental group and received the home visit parent education program for 60-90-minutes sessions for 10 weeks.
Mother-infant interaction behaviors were measured in both the experimental group(n=14) and the control group(n=15) to examine the effects of the parent education program. Independent sample t-tests were conducted to determine whether there were significant differences between changes in two groups. The result showed that for mother-infant interaction behaviors, the experimental group greatly improved while the control group reported a slight increased in interaction behaviors. There was a statistically significant difference in the degree of change in two groups of mother-infant interaction behaviors. Implications and suggestions were discussed in terms of findings of the study.
